Aussie Actress Margot Robbie Is Well On Her Way For An Oscar
Margot Robbie is on track for her first Oscar nomination after picking up another key honour, but Hugh Jackman's hopes for an invite to the Academy Awards hit a major snag.
Queenslander Robbie received a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination on Wednesday, just two days after her Golden Globes nod, to cement her place as an Oscar frontrunner.
Robbie's nominations are for playing controversial US Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in the biopic she also produced, I, Tonya.
Robbie is up against some of acting's greats for the SAG Award, with Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) the other lead actress nominations.
Jackman, nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as PT Barnum in The Greatest Showman, could not back it up with a SAG nod, weakening his chances for an Oscar nomination when they are revealed on January 23.
Gary Oldman, playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, is the frontrunner for the SAG and Oscar lead actor prizes while the other SAG nominees are Denzel Washington (Roman J Israel, ESQ), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), James Franco (The Disaster Artist) and Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name).
Australia's Abbie Cornish and Jason Clarke were also nominated in SAG's version of the best picture category - outstanding cast in a motion picture.
Cornish is a member of the cast of Three Billboards and Clarke had a starring role in Mudbound.
The other outstanding cast nominated films were The Big Sick, Get Out and Lady Bird.
Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush have been regular nominees at Hollywood award shows the past year for their TV performances and it will continue.
Kidman, for Big Little Lies, is the favourite to win the SAG in the outstanding performance by a female actor in TV movie or mini-series.
Kidman is up against Big Little Lies co-stars Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon and Feud: Bette & Joan leads Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon.
Rush was nominated for playing Albert Einstein the mini-series Genius against Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Jeff Daniels, (Godless), Robert De Niro (The Wizard of Lies) and Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies).
The SAG Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 21.
The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 4.
