Family Guy Producers Explain THAT 2005 Kevin Spacey Joke
The producers of Family Guy are finally giving the world an explanation behind that Kevin Spacey joke they put in one of their episodes over a decade ago.
The joke originally aired in 2005 but went viral in the wake of the actor’s recent sexual misconduct scandal.
Here is the joke to refresh your memory…
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane made an appearance at a Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour panel in Pasadena and was asked how he managed to get the joke into the episode.
MacFarlane revealed that, at the time, he needed to be brought up to speed on it.
"I remember when it was pitched… that was a rumour I had actually not heard and other people in the writers’ room had. And it had to be sort of explained to me," he said.
Fellow executive producer Alec Sulkin also couldn’t remember who had originally come up with the joke and said, “I think that that was something where he was coming off a story where he had been kind of beaten up in a London park, and he claimed that he was walking his dog late at night and fell, and I think that raised a lot of eyebrows.”
“It’s one of the things in terms of Standards where, if they heard the rumours, as we have, then they’ll allow it,” Sulkin further explained.
Executive producer Rich Appel spoke further of the Fox Broadcast and Standards Department.
"That’s one standard - if there’s some rumour out there that’s been public," he said.
"The other one is if it seems outrageous and no one could possibly believe it’s true, and some of those have come to pass, too. When they were aired, you thought, ’Well this is never going to happen.’”
