Williams Told To 'Stop Breastfeeding' To Improve Game
Serena Williams said that her coach told her that if she wanted to improver her performance, she should stop breastfeeding.
The 23-times grand slam winner had returned to tennis just 10 months after giving birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian, her daughter with Alexis Ohanian, a venture capitalist who founded the social news site, Reddit.
In an interview with Time magazine, Williams discussed making the difficult decision to stop breastfeeding - at the recommendation of her coach.
She had chosen to keep nursing her baby girl for her first 8 months, even though she worried it would make her return to tennis more difficult.
Williams said that when she arrived in France for the clay court training earlier this year, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou recommended that she stop breastfeeding.
"It’s absolutely hard to take from a guy," Williams told Time.
“He’s not a woman, he doesn’t understand that connection, that the best time of the day for me was when I tried to feed her.
“I’ve spent my whole life making everyone happy, just servicing it seems like everyone. And this is something I wanted to do."
Eventually, Williams decided it was best for her game to quit breastfeeding - but not before “talking it out” with her baby.
Today I say Olympia fall... but she got back up. She fell again almost immediately.... and almost immediately she got back up again. She always had a smile on her face. I learned a lot from Olympia today. Thank you my baby love. pic.twitter.com/pn0iUCZG6Q— Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) July 19, 2018
"I looked at Olympia, and I was like, ‘Listen, Mommy needs to get her body back, so Mommy’s going to stop now,’" she recalled.
"We had a really good conversation. We talked it out."
