Where Is The Cast of Free Willy Now?
Free Willy was a total hit when it hit screens way back in 1993.
It followed the story of Jesse, a 12-year-old boy, who befriended an orca, Willy, and helped “free” him from a water park.
There were two sequels to the movie, which was a staple in the childhood of anyone who grew up in the 90s.
So where is the cast now?
Jason James Richter (Jesse)
After Free Willy, Jason James Richter appeared in other films including Cops and Robbersons, The Neverending Story III and Laserhawk, as well as making a cameo appearance in Michael Jackson’s ‘Childhood’ music video. He hasn’t appeared in a film since 2001, but has since played in bands.
Danielle Harris (Gwenie)
Danielle Harris has remained active in show business in the two decades since Free Willy, with credits in shows including Bones, Family Guy and Cold Case. She also voiced Debbie Thornberry in the popular children’s show The Wild Thornberrys from 1998 to 2004. She is launching her own web talk show this year.
Michael Bacall (Perry)
Though he has played small roles in films since the 90s - most notably in Quentin Tarantino numbers including Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and Death Proof - Michael Bacall’s love these days lies in screenwriting. His recent credits include Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Project X and 21 Jump Street.
Mary Kate Schellhardt (Nadine)
The love interest in the second Free Willy film, Mary Kate Schellhardt has made TV appearances in shows including Scrubs, House MD and Private Practice in the years since.
Francis Capra (Elvis)
Francis Capra, who played Jesse’s long lost half-brother in Free Willy 2, is best known in the years since as Eli “Weevil” Navarro on Veronica Mars. He’s also appeared in series including Touch, Castle, Heroes and Friday Night Lights.
The star of the show featured in all three Free Willy films, and in 1995 a campaign was started to release him back into the wild. In 1998, Keiko was transported to an island, where trainers tried to prepare him for his return to the wild. Sadly, he died in 2003 of pneumonia at 26 years of age.
