Freo Pub Bans Dogs From Front Bar After Complaint to Council

A complaint made to council has forced a South Fremantle pub to stop patrons from bringing their doggos into the inside bar.

WAtoday reported that Fremantle local Amber King said it was usual for The Local Hotel to allow dogs inside, but she was stopped from doing so on Sunday.

"They allow dogs in the just front corner bar usually – you can take your dogs in and keep them under the table as long as they are well behaved, and it's been like that since they opened," she said.

In a post to Facebook, The Local Hotel confirmed that their dog policy had changed “after communication from the council.”

Further down the post, The Local Hotel’s owner, Phil Thompson, confirmed that a complaint was made to council.

While the matter of animals in venues falls under the authority of state government, it’s local governments which enforce the Food Act.

"Dogs are permitted in alfresco dining areas with approval of the proprietor of the venue,” a City of Fremantle spokesman said.

Which is still the case at The Local Hotel.

"Dogs are still more than welcome in our al fresco area and we will still provide water bowls for our thirsty furry friends,” they posted on Facebook.

Ms King reportedly said the venue should not be penalised due to one "pathetic complainer".

"Give us a damn break! Go elsewhere if you don't like dogs!" she said.
