Quokka Selfies Boost Visitors To WA's Rottnest Island
Quokka selfies and an "aggressive" tourism campaign have led to a 30 percent increase in the number of visitors to Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth.
Western Australia's Tourism Minister Paul Papalia says the number of people visiting the island has spiked in the past seven months, compared to the 12 months from December 2016 to 2017.
"Every anecdotal report I've had in recent times is the first quarter has been the best they've seen in years," he told reporters on Monday.
Of those visitors, 15 percent were interstate or overseas tourists, he said.
The WA government is yet to reveal the cost of the first quokka selfie with Swiss tennis star Roger Federer last December, who was flown by helicopter to the island before posting the photo on Instagram.
The happy snap reached more than 581 million people in 45 countries in about two weeks and appeared in hundreds of publications around the world.
Other celebrities who have been snapped with the furry mammal include Australian film stars Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie.
