Man Accused Of Bibbulman Track Attack Appears In Court

A Sawyers Valley man has appeared in court just days after a “horrifying” attack which left two Bibbulman Track hikers in hospital.

Matt Whittaker, 36, was not required to plead to a charge of attempting to unlawfully kill a person in the Midland Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The incident happened in Kalamunda on Saturday where the famous track, which stretches for 1000kms between Perth and Albany, begins.

Police say that the couple, both 33 and from Finland, had been walking along the trail when a motorist ran the man down with his ute before attacking him with a shovel, causing a significant head injury.

"It's believed the driver of the vehicle turned his attention to the male victim’s 33-year-old female companion, however the male victim managed to stand up and struggled with the driver," WA Police spokeswoman Susan Usher said.

The driver allegedly kept attacking the man until the woman used the shovel to hit him over the head.

A passer-by stopped to help and the three of them held the driver down until police arrived.

The male victim was discharged from Royal Perth Hospital on Monday.

Mr Whittaker made no application for bail and was remanded in custody until he appears in court again next week.
