Police Pose As Windscreen Washers To Ping Motorists
Victorian police have admitted to dressing up as windscreen washers in a sting to catch distracted drivers.
On Monday, a Facebook post revealed what had been going on at a busy intersection in Melbourne.
The covert operation saw officers wearing high-vis and carrying squeegees while cars were sitting idle at the lights.
"Part of the operation involved observations of drivers in stationary vehicles," police told 9news.com.au.
More than 35 infringement notices were issued to drivers using their mobiles.
Fines vary from state to state, but the only place in Australia where window washers at traffic lights is legal is the ACT.
Police clarified, however, that they were not actually washing any windscreens.
