Ugg Boots ‘Made In Australia’ Actually Made In China
A company which had its ‘Classic Ugg’ boots made in China while giving the impression they were made in Australia have been pinged more than $25,000.
Between January and April 2018, Ozwear Connection’s website said it was ‘100% Aussie owned’ and that its ‘Classic Ugg’ range were made using ‘the best materials available in Australia’.
Prior to May 2018, they also attached a tag that was green and gold, shaped like a map of Australia and included the words ‘this exclusive premium label is uniquely Australian owned brand for authentic Australian Ugg boots’.
The ACCC reckoned that this created a false impression that their ‘Classic Ugg’ range was Australian made when it was, in fact, made in China, and issued two infringement notices, totalling $25,200, for alleged false country of origin representations.
“Country of origin representations can be a powerful marketing tool for businesses, as many consumers are willing to pay extra for Australian made products,” ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh said.
