Fitzi's One Question He Asked Ben Cousins On A Night Out

After more than a decade of brushes with the law, fallen AFL champion Ben Cousins was sentenced to 12 months behind bars.

And, we’d be remiss if we hadn’t mentioned it on Carmen and Fitzi for Breakfast.

Especially Fitzi.

What a lot of people didn’t know is that, for years, Cousins and Fitzi worked together.

“My radio career started at a similar time Ben’s football career started,” Fitzi said.

He remembered how Cousins was nervous, shy and “not media savvy” so he couldn’t be used in the studio, so he used to accompany Fitzi out on the 96FM street team.

“He was just a lovely guy,” he said.

“He was a man in total control, there was nothing in his life he wasn’t the master of.”

Fitzi said that’s why people were still fascinated with Cousins.

“He was financially in control… he was physically in control… from the outside looking in he had the perfect relationship and the future laid out for him.”

Fitzi then recalled a conversation he had with Cousins, shortly after he had completed his first stint in rehab for alcohol.

“It was my 30th birthday and was out at a venue and Ben just happened to be out at that venue at the time,” Fitzi said.

“He’s waved me over and we’re having a chat and he starts talking about it all… I knew what he got up to, and I think he knew that I knew… but he started talking openly.”

“I said ‘I have one question for you, when did it go from a bit of fun to what you’re going through now?’

“He said ‘I went to Vegas after winning the AFL premiership, I came back and the party didn’t stop for me’. It stopped for everyone else, but not him.”

Fitzi said while some people were really upset with Cousins, he was more “cold” about it.

“I’m certainly not happy that he’s gone to jail, nor am I disappointed about it, I just hope he figures it out.”
