Hold Up, Did Eddie Just Call WA AFL Fans ‘Knuckleheads’?
Eddie McGuire has tipped the Eagles to win the western derby – and the 2019 premiership - but not before suggesting WA AFL fans were “knuckleheads”.
The Collingwood president, who has never commentated on a western derby, will travel to Perth to lead Fox Footy’s broadcast of Saturday’s clash between West Coast and Fremantle.
And WA ain’t too happy about it.
McGuire told 96FM's Paul & Lise on Thursday he didn’t know it was possible to be Public Enemy #1 just by calling a football game.
“I’ve got no dog in the fight,” he said.
McGuire shored-up comments he made earlier in the week, that he should be paid to spend more time in WA, using his high profile to promote Optus Stadium.
He also confirmed that he had been in talks with West Coast and the State Government about bringing a tourism package together, which means a quokka selfie could on the cards for McGuire.
“On the grown-ups table, yes, the conversations are going on and relationships are great,” he said.
“Down in Knucklehead Land, not much the case.”
McGuire then gave not just his tip for Saturday, but for the season.
"I think the Eagles at the moment are playing great football," he said.
"... and they are the premier team in the competition and without doubt, in my mind, the favourites to win the flag this year."
