Build it and they won’t come…
Members of the public have ridiculed Whittlesea Council’s proposal for a brand new aquatic centre between Erskine Rd and Everton Dr in Mernda.
Two proposals were put forward at the council meeting last week, one with a 25m eight-lane pool and the other with NO lane pool whatsoever.
Stunned locals said not having a 50m lap pool in either of the proposals was “ridiculous” and like “having a pub with no beer”.
The rest of the money would be put to warm water pools, water play areas, teaching pools, gym, spa and a sauna.
The decision was widely mocked on social media (609 out of 850 respondents demanded a 50m pool) and also by Swimming Victoria Metro North vice president Pierre Apap.
“With a 25m pool you may as well not have a pool,” Mr Apap told the Herald Sun.
“On a hot day people would be crammed in like sardines in a can, it’s ridiculous.”
He also suggested the 50m pool would attract competition swimmers who would triple revenue.
