Last night at the Australian Open, Japanese player Kei Nishikori’s body gave up and he was forced to retire with a leg injury against Novak Djokovic.
However, it has left fans who had paid hundreds for their tickets pretty angry.
One user said “Aaand (sic) Mr Glass retires. Most expensive 52 minutes of my life. #AusOpen refund please,” one user wrote.
Whole another stated that this has become a habit for Nishikori, saying “Oh quel surprise – Nishikori abandons a big match half way through! So unexpected! Is he going to give refunds to all the ppl that wasted money on a ticket.’’
It was Nishikori’s 18th career retirement and his fifth in a Grand Slam.
Explaining what happened, he said: “Before the match, I was okay,” Nishikori said. “Of course, I wasn’t, like, fresh, fresh. I thought I was going to be okay. After third game or fourth game when I was serving, I felt pretty heavy to my right leg.
“After that I couldn’t really bend my knees and couldn’t jump up. Yeah, I decided to stop.”
The Australian Open has yet to comment.
