It looks like the next 90s sitcom to see a reboot will be The Nanny after star of the show Fran Drescher revealed that she’s in talks about remaking the show almost 20 years after it finished.
The 60-year-old actress behind the loveable and hilarious nanny from Queens on the show told Entertainment Tonight that she had been having discussions with her ex-husband and co-creator of The Nanny Peter Marc Jacobson.
“We’re talking about it. Peter and I are talking about it,” she said to Entertainment Tonight. “We’re working on a very big project. It’s going to be very exciting for the fans, but I’m not at liberty to announce it yet. But it’s gonna be big.”
The last we saw of nanny Fran Fine she had just married her dapper British boss Maxwell Sheffield and the couple were preparing to have kids together. But according to Drescher if the reboot does go ahead it will not pick up exactly where it left off. In fact, she said that we could expect Fran Fine to have accomplished a lot over the years that we’ve been apart from her.
“She would’ve maybe gotten involved in more things [that] Fran Drescher is involved with,” explained Drescher. “All kinds of things from environmental issues, to health, to civil liberties, that’s what I think Fran would be doing now – opening her big Queens mouth for the greater good.”
“The thing is our show would be the same characters 20 years later,” continued Fran. “We can’t just pick up where we left off. But in a way, that could be really good because the show can have a whole fresh bend to it.”
Drescher first hinted at the idea of a remake of The Nanny in an interview in December last year, saying that she would be keen if others were also onboard.
“As far as a reboot goes, I would be open to it if somebody wanted to do it,” she said to Closer Weekly.
The only bump in the road to seeing The Nanny on our TV screens though might be the guy who played Mr Sheffield, Charles Shaughnessy as he said that he was unsure how they could make it work.
“The whole concept of The Nanny is a nanny to these three kids. When those three kids are all grown up, there is no need for a nanny,” he said last year. “Other than getting a bunch of the same actors 20 years later and 20 years older together again, I don’t know how it would work.”
Oh come on Mr Sheffield stop being such a negative Nancy! We need to get Fran Fine and her hilarious antics (plus her bloody amazing fashion choices) in our lives once again!
