Australia was left shocked and confused when fan favourite Cam Merchant broke down on camera.
The 35-year-old – along with his ‘wife’ Jules Robinson – are widely regarded as the show’s resident ‘perfect couple’, which prompted fans to question the cause of his unexplained emotional outburst.
Cam has since cleared things up, telling MAFS fans that producers failed to explain what really happened in that heartbreaking scene.
Many have speculated that there may have been a death in the family, or the ex-cricketer was recalling the terrifying moment he was separated from his parents during the Boxing Day Tsunami.
Others have attributed it simply to the intensive schedule for filming reality TV, which involves 12-hour days in an emotionally-charged environment.
However, according to Jules, Cam had received some very sad news about a child he mentors.
Since the show didn’t delve into what prompted Cam’s heartbreaking outburst, online trolls proceeded to send the star degrading messages.
“I’m absolutely saddened and angry at all the trolling done tonight regarding my husband showing his emotions,” Jules wrote in response to the backlash.
“I truly believe that it is a sign of strength in a man to be able to cry and the world needs to be educated.
“Cam cried because he cares. It wasn’t just the experiment… it was a build up of so many things. I’m proud of my husband.
“It’s ok for men to cry. Especially when it’s a selfless act.”
While some unfairly ridiculed the MAFS star for crying, others have praised his courage and the importance of speaking out about male mental health issues – a topic that is largely swept under the rug.
Cam – who works as a mental health coach to young men – says that there was a lot playing on his mind at the time, and doesn’t understand why the producers chose to edit out the complete reasoning behind his breakdown.
