The Russo Brothers, directors of Avengers: Endgame have recently said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be taking a big step for LGBTQ+ representation in the upcoming films in the franchise.

Just after Disney announced that we’ll be seeing 8 Marvel movies over the next few years, the Russo Brothers confirmed that these films will see at least one character we know come out as gay.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard this from Marvel either; last year Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, said that upcoming films would feature the reveal of at least two gay characters; “both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t”.

Before this latest information from the Russo brothers, a few fans were assuming we’d already seen the two in question; Valkyrie, as confirmed by actress Tessa Thompson, and the openly gay man portrayed by Joe Russo himself in Avengers: Endgame.

The latest news came while Entertainment Weekly was discussing Joe’s character in Endgame, who is part of a group therapy session in which he describes going on his first date with another man since Thanos’ Snap.

“It was an integral scene to show how the world was reacting to what happened in at the end of Infinity War,” Joe said.

When asked who else in the MCU might be gay, the Russo Brothers simply said “that’s a story for another day”.

So which character we know from the enormous MCU will be the first one to come out as gay? A good chunk of the internet wants it to be (and thinks it already is) Captain Marvel (aka. Carol Danvers).

Given what we saw between Carol and her friend Maria in Captain Marvel, that wouldn’t be the most surprising reveal. Beyond their chemistry we also heard Maria’s daughter call Danvers “Auntie Carol”. Some have said it would be forced to assume their friendship was a romance, but it seems like the LGBTQ+ community adopted it with open arms.

But apparently we might found out for sure from the top Brass; “There is a gay character coming up in one of their films, and I think Kevin will make that announcement, I’m sure pretty soon,” according to Joe Russo.
