One very lucky person has just become a billionaire after the grand prize in the biggest lottery draw in history went to just one ticket. But they don’t yet know of their good fortune.
The Mega Millions Jackpot Lottery over in the US was drawn on Tuesday night local time and officials have said that a ticket purchased in South Carolina matched all six numbers, winning a whopping $US1.6 billion, or $AU2.25 billion.

“The moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Gordon Medenica, the lead director of the Mega Millions Group and Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, in a statement.
“This is truly a historic occasion. We’re so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can’t wait to met the lucky ticket holder.”
The former record for the grand prize in the US Mega Millions jackpot was set at $US656 million back in March 2012.
This new history making jackpot of over two billion Australian dollars has been rolling since July 24, when an office pool of 11 people in California won $US543 million in prize money.
It’s likely that the winner of this life changing money is not yet aware as the ticket was not registered and has not yet been claimed. The winning ticket was reportedly purchased from a KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
The winning numbers for the draw on 23 were 5, 28, 62, 65 and 70 in the white balls, plus the gold Mega Ball number 5.
