It was a fitting send-off from Sir Elton John who kicked off the Aussie leg of his epic Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Perth at the weekend.

Elton closed-out his two Perth gigs with none other than Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I mean, it’d be rude not to.

But let’s back up.

Walking in to HBF Park on Saturday, 96FM’s Fred Botica said you could feel the vibe going in as the sun went down.

“It was packed to the rafters and a real sense of anticipation,” he said.

“People were dressed up in amazing outfits and then, right on 7.30pm, as he usually is, on time, out walked a very resplendent Elton John in a Gucci outfit, sat down at the piano and started what was one of the most amazing shows I have seen in a long, long time.”

Fred said that Elton kicked everything of with Bennie and the Jets which “got everyone going” but it was looking at the band that really took Fred back.

“Seeing Ray Cooper, Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson just took me back to the first time I ever saw Elton John in 1971, they were there with him on the stage.”

Fred recalled a couple of photos he took of that concert.

“The stage was covered in corrugated iron roofing because that’s what the set was in those days,” he said.

“Compared to [Saturday] night which was one of the most amazing sets I’ve seen in a long time – a screen that was, graphically, so stunning, the sound was brilliant.”

“You couldn’t fault anything about the production, it was just amazing.”

Freddy also brought up Elton’s setlist.

“He picked great songs to play, it’s a big songbook, what do you choose?”

But it was also the way Elton spoke to the audience, knowing it was his farewell tour.

“[He spoke] about his personal life, the changes that have happened and why he’s actually finishing.”

Fred also remarked on Elton’s command of the piano.

“His piano playing is like no other,” he said.

“He’s classical, jazz, honky tonk, whatever you like, he just makes that piano sing.”

But it was one electrifying moment that stood out to Fred.

“It was going really well, and then, all of a sudden, there was lightning and thunder and the hair on the back of my neck stood up as they launched into ‘Funeral For A Friend’ and ‘Love Lies Bleeding’,” he said.

“It was just sensational.”
