A work-release prisoner was the unlikely hero when he used his car thieving skills to help save a 1-year-old locked inside a car in Florida.

The mother of the baby said her husband had just strapped their daughter into the car seat when he threw the keys in the front seat.

When he closed the back door, he realised the car was locked.

However, a group of inmates were working nearby when they rushed to help.

One inmate used a clothes hanger to unlock the door within seconds.

Sheriff Chris Nocco admitted it was a unique situation, allowing an inmate to use his skill set to break into a car.

“They know they made bad mistakes, bad choices but they want to do the right thing in life,” Nocco said.

The child was not hurt.

The mother said she was grateful and hoped to learn who the inmates were so she could contribute to their commissary accounts.
