After 24 years, a new era of the iconic cartoon strip, The Far Side, is on its way!
Over the weekend, fans noticed that not only had the website been updated, but a new cartoon appeared with the message: “Uncommon, unreal, and (soon-to-be) unfrozen. A new online era of The Far Side is coming!”
The Far Side ran from 1980 to 1995 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, best known for its surrealistic humour and often based on uncomfortable social situations and anthropomorphic characters’ view of the world.
Since his retirement, Gary Larson was against digital reproductions of this work, urging fans not to share the images online without his consent.
“These cartoons are my ‘children,’ of sorts, and like a parent, I’m concerned about where they go at night without telling me,” Larson wrote in 1999.
“And, seeing them at someone’s web site is like getting the call at 2:00 a.m. that goes, ‘Uh, Dad, you’re not going to like this much, but guess where I am.'”
Oh my god.

So the Far Side is maybe updating again and I’m holding my breath desperately hoping that Gary Larson turns out to be one of the good boomers and we’re not going to see two cows whining about cancel culture

Hey kids, if you’re checking twitter and are confused by all the adults going nuts for something called “Far Side” it was a comic that shaped the humor of a whole jaded, sarcastic, weird generation. The creator retired in ‘95.

Looking forward to the return of Far Side, and Larsen trying to make sense of a world that he sarcastically predicted. pic.twitter.com/QxBDwztz0F
