Mindhunter’s audience wasn’t huge, but we’re an irrationally invested lot.

The fact that it won’t be picked up for a third season, well, it hurts. There’s so much more to the story. More serial killers to profile.

Like an emotionally unavailable boyfriend, creator David Fincher plays with us by saying it’s on ice indefinitely, only to tell Variety that he’s not giving up on it.

“I don’t know if it makes sense to continue,” he said.

“It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.”

Starring Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv as FBI agents who launch a task force to interview serial killers as a way of understanding them, debuted in 2017.

Fincher had hoped to have a new series cranked out every 12 to 14 months, but production delays and headaches meant a two-year delay between seasons.

Making the second season was “exhausting” for Fincher, who described it as a nightmare to produce.

He apparently binned eight scripts, fired the first showrunner, and threw out Mindhunter‘s ‘bible’ which pretty much outlined the show’s ‘universe’, including future seasons (*screams*).

So, a third season? Off the table.

“I’ll admit I was a little bit like ‘I don’t know that I’m ready to spend another two years in the crawl space.’”

But all you have to do is throw a ‘maybe’ out there and us fans come running, amirite?

Fincher said he’s hopeful that pouring cold water on the show for now might reignite his passion for it in the future and tie up the loose ends, you know, such as the entire story arc for the BTK Killer, Dennis Rader, who we’ve only ever seen in Mindhunter’s short, cold opens.

“At some point I’d love to revisit it,” he said.

“The hope was to get all the way up to the late 90’s, early 2000’s, hopefully get all the way up to people knocking on the door at Dennis Rader’s house.”

Le sigh, we hope so too, David.

Mindhunter seasons one and two are still on Netflix
