Paramount Pictures has released the full trailer for Elton John biopic Rocketman, starring actor/singer Taron Egerton as John.
Egerton’s performance in the film has already garnered a lot of attention. Not only does the Kingsman actor recreate John’s most iconic looks, the 29-year-old also performs all the vocals in the film in the studio and on set with no miming — something nearly unheard of in the music biopic realm.
A video released earlier this week by Paramount touts Egerton’s versatile performance.
Producer Giles Martin explained that Sir Elton himself was wholly complimentary of Egerton’s performance, saying that he hasn’t heard anyone sing his songs better than the actor.
Egerton described the film as a “fantasy musical,” as opposed to a traditional biopic, in which John’s iconic catalog is used to “express important beats in his life at emotional moments.”
“Elton’s songs are defining moments in people’s lives,” Egerton said. “And the songs should all come from a place of character.”
The film also stars Jamie Bell in the role of John’s longtime lyricist and collaborator Bernie Taupin; Richard Madden as John’s first manager John Reid; Bryce Dallas Howard as John’s mother; and Gemma Jones as the singer’s grandmother.
Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who completed Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was fired.
