A ‘bin tagging’ program is reportedly being rolled out where repeat recycling offenders could have their bin taped shut and not be collected.
Some councils are already doing bin checks, but this is a step further for residents who repeatedly put the wrong stuff in their recycling bin.
PerthNow reported that the Shire of Denmark has started bin checks after about 40% of their kerbside recycling was winding up in landfill due to ‘contamination’.
WA Local Government Association guidelines say that those who continually cram whatever into their recycling bin can “have their bin taped shut and … not be collected”.
WALGA is seeking expressions of interest for the scheme.
