Sick of lining up in checkouts? Get stressed out at the self-serve scanners?
Well, cop this: the whole idea of a checkout looks set to completely disappear.
Coles Head Of Commercial and Express Greg Davis told Fairfax that it’ll be reality in the next 10 years.
“Customers will be able to take the product off the shelf, put it in their basket, walk out and have it all paid for,” he said.
Coles is reportedly aiming to start implementing ‘Smarter Selling’ technology by 2023 to make shopping a checkout-free experience.
The same tech is already used by Amazon’s Go stores – using AI, sensors and data to identify what customers put in their bags and charge their accounts once they’ve left the store.
Woolworths has also begun moving in a similar direction with their Scan&Go system where shoppers scan their items on their phone and pay online after they leave.
