Shortly after Botica’s Bunch spoke to Aussie cricketer Mitchell Johnson about the ruthless training he underwent on SAS Australia, Fred recalled his own physically brutal experience.

It was 1980 and Fred had participated in a windsurfing race in Hawaii between the islands Molokaʻi and Maui – known as The Pailolo Channel.

“It means ‘crazy fisherman’,” Fred explained when describing the channel. “They reckon that fisherman that went out there to fish were called crazy.”

And he went out there as a windsurfer.

In 25-foot swell.
