He’s the new voice on 96FM and, on Monday morning, Christian O’Connell joined Botica’s Bunch for a casual round of ‘Getting To Know You’… and we ended up knowing far more than we bargained for.

So Christian has already had some brilliant guests, including Ricky Gervais just last week, his dream guest was not what we expected.

“The Dalai Lama,” he said.

But it was the reason why that we were even more unprepared for.

“It was the strangest job I’ve ever been offered,” Christian began.

“I do stand-up [comedy] as well, and many years ago, the Dalai Lama was coming to London and he was going to be doing an open-air gig… I don’t know if you can call what the Dalai Lama does a ‘gig’, but he was going to be doing it at a football ground.”

Christian continued by saying that one of the Dalai Lama’s people heard him talk about how odd it seemed.

“They asked if I’d like to be the warm-up man for the Dalai Lama.”

It was one of the rare times that Christian felt nervous at the prospect.

“If you’re a fan of the Dalai Lama, the one person you don’t want to see is anyone else who isn’t the Dalai Lama. They’re not going to find me funny doing a load of Dalai Lama material,” he deadpanned.

“So I said no, and it’s the one gig I regret, I mean, what a story, you were the warm-up act for the Dalai Lama”

Lisa was baffled.

“I didn’t think the Dalai Lama would have a warm-up guy, like Mother Theresa didn’t have a support act, did she?”

Christian agreed, saying he just didn’t know what Buddhists were like as a crowd.

“Do they get rough and start to heckle you?”
