The City of Perth Lord Mayor says he forgot he was the City of Perth Lord Mayor in an apology over transphobic comments he made on breakfast radio.
Mr Zempilas, who was elected to Lord Mayor only nine days ago, told listeners it was “wrong” for someone to identify as a different gender to their physical anatomy.
“If you’ve got a penis mate, you’re a bloke,” he had said.
“If you’ve got a vagina, you’re a woman. Game over.”
His co-host Steve Mills disagreed, saying it was “no, not game over,” to which Mr Zempilas replied, “Well mate, if you want to go softy, lefty, namby-pamby.”
Mr Zempilas then asked listeners who “have a penis but are a woman” to call into the station for the chance to win a $100 Retravision voucher.
On Thursday, the Channel 7 personality and The West Australian columnist said he “forgot” who he was.
“For a brief moment, at 25 minutes past five yesterday, I forgot I was the Lord Mayor of the City of Perth.”
“It’s my job to be better than that and it won’t happen again… I regret the comments that I made, I know they’re not helpful.”
Meanwhile, the City of Vincent says they will “always keep their doors open for Pride” after a petition, organised by former Pride WA president Paul van Lieshout Hunt, suggested it should move to the “more progressive” electorate.
“The City of Vincent has been by Pride WA’s side and a sponsor of PrideFEST for more than 20 years and our community greatly values inclusivity and diversity,” City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole told 96FM.
“We are the home of Pride Fair Day and Pride WA has their headquarters in Vincent.
“The Pride Parade is an incredible celebration of sexual and gender diversity. It is a major cultural event for Perth and also attracts huge tourism and economic benefits.
“I understand the City of Perth really wants to keep the Parade in Northbridge, and that Pride WA sees Northbridge as the spiritual home of the Parade and I respect that.
“Ultimately it is a decision for PrideWA.
“We will always keep the doors open for Pride.”
