Perth is copping one helluva intro to summer with the city hyped to hit the earliest 40-degree December day on record.

The hot air is coming off a trough in the north which is making its way south and expected to push temperature well above the forecast 39 degrees.

If we hit 40 degrees on Tuesday, it’ll be the earliest in December Perth has done so since records began.

“It’s certainly a very hot start to summer,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Pete Clegg told the ABC.

“Certainly not something that we’ve seen at least sort of in the order of eight or nine years — that we’ve had the three or four days of 35-plus in December.

“And it’s very unusual to see it this early in December as well.”

The next few days will be more of the same – Wednesday is expected a max of 36 degrees and Friday, well, it looks likely we’ll hit 40 again.

There won’t be much relief under the cover of darkness either with minimum temps not expected to drop below 20 degrees until Sunday.
