Premier Mark McGowan is keeping a keen eye on Melbourne as he prepares to make an announcement over Phase 5.
WA was due to roll out Phase 5 last weekend, but was pushed back until August 1 following a spike in coronavirus cases in Victoria.
“We’re just getting the health advice and will say something further this week,” he told Botica’s Bunch on Thursday.
McGowan added that he didn’t feel vindicated about his hard stance over the WA border, but felt sadness for Melbourne.
“It’d be quite traumatic,” he said.
“I don’t have relatives in Melbourne but lots of people do and they’re our fellow Australians, so we all feel for them.”
McGowan said he still felt like the strict border was the right thing to do and that we had to keep it in place to try and prevent the virus from coming in.
“Chances are, at some point in time, someone will slip through, you know, this may go on for years, we just have to make sure we’re ready for that, if and when it occurs.”
An announcement over Phase 5 is expected in the coming days.
