Perth drivers who parked illegally in CBD clearways during the coronavirus pandemic will have towing fees reimbursed, costing the state government about $200,000.

The government will return the payments after fines were imposed amid confusion over a moratorium on towing fees and the introduction of free on-street parking at the end of March.

However, it says that moratorium will be lifted from Monday.

“The City of Perth introduced free on-street parking in the CBD due to lower traffic volumes in the city brought on by COVID-19 restrictions,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

“This created a lot of confusion among some drivers who wrongly assumed this free parking extended to clearways.”

Ms Saffioti said Perth traffic volumes had also returned to about 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels after falling to about 50 per cent last month.

She said with more people returning to work, the CBD clearway rules would be strictly enforced.
