The WA Police Commissioner has confirmed that while there have been a couple of burglaries in fire-affected areas, he stopped short at calling it ‘looting’.
Commissioner Chris Dawson made the comments during a bushfire and COVID-19 update on Wednesday where we learned WA had a third day of no new local cases of the virus.
“I know there are reports of alleged looting,” he said. “I have two reports of burglaries.”
He revealed one burg was at a home in Aveley which had been evacuated as a precautionary measure, and the other a property in the vicinity of Red Hill.
“In both instances a small number of items were stolen,” he said, adding that the occupants had left as a consequence of the evacuation.
“I would not, and I’m not trying to underplay this, characterise this as looting, but it is a serious concern that there have been two burglaries.”
He said police had already been patrolling the evacuated area, which was something that would “thoroughly continue”.
