Australia’s most decorated soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith, has rejected allegations he was involved in a war crime.

A report broadcast on 60 Minutes on Sunday night cited two anonymous sources claiming Mr Roberts-Smith had instigated the execution of an Afghan farmer in 2012.

He has released a statement saying he categorically denies the allegations.

“I am concerned that tonight’s story and the previous publications by the SMH/Age are an attempt to improperly influence the outcome of the (Inspector-General of the Defence Force) inquiry,” he said.

“None of the witnesses on tonight’s broadcast provided any direct evidence of any sort to support their allegations.”

A Defence inquiry and a criminal investigation by the Australian Federal Police on the matter is reportedly in progress.
