Police say an Albany man caused unnecessary fear after allegedly catching a great white shark, removing its tag then setting off hoax shark alerts.

The Albany Advertiser reported the 48-year-old man allegedly used the tag to activate shark monitoring network receivers in local waters on seven occasions during August and September.

Police said they found an acoustic tag at the man’s home which had been fitted to a shark by the Fisheries Department as part of their tagging and monitoring program.

He’s been charged with one count of stealing.
