Ten minutes into the final quarter at Optus Stadium on Monday night, the Eagles were trailing Melbourne 69-36… and the game was stopped.

With 16 minutes remaining, players were suddenly ordered off the field.

We now know it was due to lightning approaching the stadium but, at the time, it seems things were a bit more confusing on the field.

Elliot Yeo told The Bunch that players “didn’t know what to do” as nothing like this had ever really happened to them before.

“I remember all the players looking around, going ‘what the hell’s going on here?’ and a few of the boys looking at each other thinking someone had given away a free kick and they didn’t know what had happened,” he said.

It was meant to be a short break, but it ended up being the longest quarter in AFL history…
