Foo Fighters are celebrating their 30th anniversary with a powerful new single, a nod to their punk roots, and a heartfelt message from frontman Dave Grohl that reflects on three decades of music, loss, and resilience.

The new track, Today’s Song, is the band’s first original release since their 2023 album But Here We Are. Released on Wednesday (July 2), the slow-burning track, according to the band, is about “perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainty and the passage of time.”

Grohl shared a deeply personal 13-minute spoken-word message alongside the release, acknowledging the band’s journey and the people who shaped it – past and present.

“Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory and moments of painful defeat,” he said. “We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”

Grohl also paid tribute to former members William Goldsmith, Franz Stahl and more recently, drummer Josh Freese, thanking them for their energy, wisdom, and musical contributions. But it was his words about late drummer Taylor Hawkins that hit hardest.

“Taylor… Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever,” he said. “The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”

Just days earlier, on June 30, Foo Fighters surprised fans by dropping a blistering cover of Minor Threat’s I Don’t Wanna Hear It, a punk homage that also coincided with the anniversary of the band’s self-titled debut album, released June 26, 1995. While many assumed that cover was the band’s 30th anniversary gesture, Today’s Song proves they had something far more personal and profound in store.

As Foo Fighters look ahead, Today’s Song isn’t just a celebration – it’s a reflection.
