Vietnam is fast emerging as a top international destination for Australian travellers, with new data revealing a dramatic surge in popularity this year. Outpacing other beloved hotspots such as Bali or Japan, Vietnam’s momentum shows no sign of slowing, and experts say the trend is here to stay.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of Australians visiting Vietnam jumped by an impressive 54% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2019.
Tour operator InsideAsia Tours also reported a 46% year-on-year increase in direct bookings for the first half of 2025, reflecting growing demand from Aussie holidaymakers.
Meanwhile, travel platform Klook recorded a 250% spike in hotel bookings in Vietnam between March and June this year, compared to the same period in 2024. Activity bookings surged by 170% over that same timeframe.
So, what’s driving the boom? In a word: value.
Vietnam offers exceptional bang for buck, with the strong Australian dollar going a long way against the Vietnamese dong. Budget-conscious travellers can stretch their dollars further, enjoying an average meal or taxi ride for around $5 AUD. Even a 1-litre bottle of water – essential in a country where tap water isn’t advised – costs less than $1.
The affordability of everyday experiences means travellers can enjoy a deeper, richer trip without blowing the budget.
Vietnam’s popularity was also reflected in the Australian Travel Industry Association’s latest Travel Trends Report. In April, Vietnam recorded the highest growth in Aussie arrivals at 28.5%, ahead of Japan (17%) and China (12.7%).
With its unique charm, cultural richness, and unbeatable affordability, Vietnam is rapidly cementing its status as a must-visit destination for Australians chasing adventure, discovery, and great value.
