An investigation – and one helluva clean-up – is underway in the Pilbara after a train derailed on Saturday night.

Some 30 loaded wagons overturned about 6.30pm, 20 kilometres out of Dampier on a rail line solely used by mining giant Rio Tinto.

The train was driverless, and no one was injured.

It’s understood that each wagon can hold up to 118 tonnes of iron ore.

“We have started an investigation into the incident and notified the appropriate regulators,” Rio Tinto said.

They stopped short at whether its operations have been disrupted.
