The prospector, who wanted to stay anonymous, was using his entry level Minelab Equinox 800 metal detector, which retails for around $1200, when he discovered the incredible 4.6kg find.

The prospector, thinking it could be somewhat valuable, took it to Geelong based gold trader, Darren Kamp from Lucky Strike Gold.

“He said, ‘do you think there’s $10,000 worth?’ And as soon as it hit my hand I said, ‘try $100,000’,” Kamp told 9News.

“And he said, ‘oh wow, the wife’s going to be happy with that’.”

The prospector told Mr Kamp that he had only brought half the nugget in his shop for inspection and that the other half was at home.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find,” Kamp said.

The 4.6kg rock contained around 2.6kg of gold with a suggested value of a whopping $240,000.
